Watching Bowen Yang take his final bow on Saturday Night Live alongside his good friend and host Ariana Grande has prompted me to reflect on the impact of his time on the show.

As someone who lives outside of America, I first discovered SNL on YouTube during lockdown. This show offered me more than just comedy; it provided a space where I could just take a breather and enjoy (cringey but) great comedy about current topics, politics and pop culture. My personal favourites include the iconic Kate McKinnon, Kenan Thompson, and Kristen Wiig. However, none have captured my admiration quite like Bowen Yang.

Joining the cast as a writer in its 44th season and then stepping onto the stage as a cast member in the 45th, Bowen made history as the show’s first Chinese-American performer. His journey resonates deeply with many, offering representation and proving to countless individuals that their voices and experiences matter in the entertainment industry.

Bowen has created and portrayed some of the most unforgettable characters on the show, and it’s hard to imagine SNL without him. Witnessing his last performance was more emotional than I anticipated. Each line he delivered and every character he embodied seemed infused with layers of meaning—a reflection on his time with the show and a farewell to the cast and crew, as well as fans who have come to love him.

"I just feel so lucky that I ever got to work here..."

Thank you, Bowen, for being an inspiring figure for so many who see themselves in you. You will be deeply missed, but your legacy will live on in the hearts of SNL fans everywhere.
